bacterial water lillies — Researchers in the Department of Pediatrics submitted two photos to the American Society of Microbiology’s Agar Art contest. This is titled “Water Lily,” inspired by Monet. Chromogens in the agar release a colored compound when broken down by enzymes produced by bacteria, resulting in a variety of bacteria appearing different colors. Learn more and vote on Facebook.

Researchers in the Department of Pediatrics submitted two photos to the American Society of Microbiology’s Agar Art contest. This is titled “Dearly Beloved,” in honor of Prince. Chromogens in the agar release a colored compound when broken down by enzymes produced by bacteria, resulting in a variety of bacteria appearing different colors.
