Cindy Brantmeier, a professor of applied linguistics and global studies in Arts and Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, will serve on the advisory board for LANGUAGES, a multinational language acquisition research study examining teachers’ instruction and students’ use of languages in European classrooms.
Brantmeier is the principal investigator in the Language Research Laboratory at WashU where she and her team study variables that enhance or hinder language acquisition. As a member of the advisory board, Brantmeier will share her expertise in language acquisition research.
Using video-recorded observations from classrooms in England, Norway and France, researchers in the international collaborative project are working to better understand how teachers support language development among students from different proficiency levels and language backgrounds. Additionally, they hope the research will provide possible solutions to problems with classroom interaction, inclusion and identity.
The project, which kicked off during the 2022-2023 school year, is coordinated by the University of Oslo, in collaboration with University of Bergen in Norway, École normale supérieure de Lyon in France and the University of Exeter and University of Oxford in the U.K.
