Provost highlights lab safety with new faculty

Provost H. Holden Thorp, PhD, and members of the Washington University in St. Louis community don safety glasses during a new faculty orientation Aug. 19 in Umrath Hall Lounge. Thorp says the university has an obligation to instill a culture that promotes safety. He recently served as chair of a National Research Council committee that released a report, “Safe Science: Promoting a Culture of Safety in Academic Chemical Research.” The report’s main conclusion is that a holistic approach that goes beyond simple compliance with existing rules is the best way to reduce the potential hazards of chemical research — and all of the potential hazards organizations face.
