The Washington University Students for International Collaboration on the Environment (WUSICE) recently was granted the opportunity to send the first WUSTL delegation to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP17).
The conference, set for Nov. 28-Dec. 9 in Durban, South Africa, brings together representatives of the world’s governments, international organizations and civil society to assess progress in regard to climate change.
Working with the Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton, WUSICE applied last semester and recently learned that it was accepted.
The group is in the process of building an effective interdisciplinary delegation of undergraduate and graduate students. WUSICE is seeking students from a variety of backgrounds who have an interest in international environmental negotiations.
Any students interested in joining the delegation should email Jeremy Pivor at jeremy82191@gmail.com by Thursday, Sept. 29. An informational meeting about the conference and what it means to be a delegate is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, in Room 276 of Danforth University Center.
Members of the delegation will assist in research and advising for stakeholders and will learn firsthand about international environmental negotiations.
The WUSTL delegation will collaborate with Yale and Duke universities and findings will be reported at the 2012 McDonnell Academy Global Energy and Environment Partnership symposium in Mumbai.
