John E. Powers II has been appointed vice chancellor and general counsel for Washington University in St. Louis, Chancellor Andrew D. Martin announced. He has served as chief counsel at WashU Medicine.

John F. Bade, a former executive of The Boeing Co. and a longtime professor of practice, has been named executive director of the Henry Edwin Sever Institute in the McKelvey School of Engineering.

Chancellor Andrew D. Martin has appointed a committee to begin the process of identifying the next dean of WashU Medicine. David H. Perlmutter, MD, will conclude his deanship in June 2026.

Ana Maria Arbeláez, MD, and Stephanie A. Fritz, MD, have been named co-vice chairs of clinical investigation in the Department of Pediatrics at WashU Medicine.

Associate Professor Chandler Ahrens has been named chair of graduate architecture in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. The new role took effect July 1. 

The Danforth Staff Council at WashU has added 10 new members and elected its executive officers for the academic year.

The Washington University in St. Louis Board of Trustees has elected a new trustee to a four-year term. In addition, a new vice chair and four undergraduate and graduate student representatives were elected for the 2025–26 academic year.

Mark D. West, a renowned legal scholar and former dean of the University of Michigan Law School, has been appointed provost of Washington University in St. Louis, effective August 1, according to Chancellor Andrew D. Martin.

James Friend, of the University of California, San Diego, has been named chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science in the McKelvey School of Engineering. His appointment will begin in 2026.

Beverly R. Wendland, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs, will complete her provost appointment after a successful five-year term in the role. Her transition is effective July 31, according to Chancellor Andrew D. Martin.
