WashU’s Digital Intelligence & Innovation Accelerator is making research, operations and data collection faster than ever to support faculty, students and staff.

Doug E. Frantz has been appointed the new vice chancellor for innovation and commercialization at WashU, effective Jan. 1, according to Chancellor Andrew D. Martin and David H. Perlmutter, MD, executive vice chancellor for medical affairs and dean of the School of Medicine.

How do we reason? When do we apply value judgments? Over the last year, WashU’s Civil Society Initiative has sponsored a range of classes, guest speakers and public events exploring the nature of responsible democratic citizenship.

The Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Equity invites its faculty affiliates to apply for course innovation grants of up to $5,000. Tila Neguse, senior associate director, says the grants are designed to support next-generation learning opportunities that bring students together to better understand race and ethnicity. Applications are due Nov. 25.

Linying Zhang, an assistant professor of biostatistics at WashU Medicine, received the American Medical Informatics Association 2024 Edward H. Shortliffe Doctoral Dissertation Award honorable mention.

WashU officially will launch the Program in Public Health & Society — including a major and minor —  at a celebratory event Monday, Oct. 21. The program, in Arts & Sciences, offers a distinctive interdisciplinary approach to public health.

Mary Jo Bang, a professor of English in Arts & Sciences, will receive the 2024 Tradition of Literary Excellence Award from the University City Municipal Commission on Arts & Letters.

Hylarie McMahon, a professor emerita of art in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, died in hospice Oct. 1 following a short illness. She was 94.

Submissions are sought for the third annual William H. Danforth St. Louis Confluence Award. The deadline is Nov. 22.
