Four members of the WashU community are recipients of the St. Louis Business Journal’s 2024 Champions for Diversity & Inclusion Awards.

Dwight A. McBride, the Gerald Early Distinguished Professor in Arts & Sciences and a senior advisor to the chancellor, is the new executive director of the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Equity.

The STARS College Network, which partners with top colleges to help students from small towns and rural communities enroll in, succeed at and graduate from the undergraduate program of their choice, is doubling its membership to include 32 of the nation’s universities. WashU, a founding STARS member, is recruiting and enrolling more rural students since it joined the network last year.

The Bouchet Graduate Honor Society, established in 2005 by Yale University and Howard University to recognize outstanding scholarly achievement, recently inducted eight doctoral candidates and two postdoctoral fellows from Washington University.

Postdoctoral research scholar Sade Williams Clayton works to advocate and build community for postdoctoral research trainees and others. She recently received a national award from the National Postdoctoral Association for her efforts.

Monica Shokeen, an associate professor of radiology at the School of Medicine and vice chair for diversity, equity, inclusion and justice at the School of Medicine’s Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology (MIR), was honored with the International Suffrage Science Award for Life Sciences.

Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis has received the 2024 National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education Institutional Excellence Award for professional schools.

The 18th annual African Film Festival returns to Washington University in St. Louis March 22-24. Highlights include screenings of “Omen,” an award-winning drama from the Democratic Republic of Congo; “Banel and Adama,” a love story from Senegal; and the youth matinee featuring five short films including the Annie Award-winning animated short “Enkai.”
