The 18th annual African Film Festival returns to Washington University in St. Louis March 22-24. Highlights include screenings of “Omen,” an award-winning drama from the Democratic Republic of Congo; “Banel and Adama,” a love story from Senegal; and the youth matinee featuring five short films including the Annie Award-winning animated short “Enkai.”

Olin Business School’s annual “She Suite,” a panel discussion on women and leadership in the business world, is from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7, in Knight Hall’s Emerson Auditorium. Register to attend the event in person or virtually.

Anna Gonzalez, vice chancellor for student affairs at Washington University in St. Louis, has been selected as one of 40 women making a difference in higher education by “Diverse: Issues In Higher Education,” a leading publication that covers diversity news in colleges and universities. 

The university has established a framework to examine issues of naming or renaming of buildings and other spaces, professorships and scholarships. People can submit requests for named features to be reviewed. Applications are open for two at-large members to join the Naming Review Board.

Members of the Greenwood Cemetery Preservation Association will receive the annual Rosa L. Parks Award during the university’s Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, at Graham Chapel. 

Nia Hodges, a second-year master’s student studying data analytics and statistics at the McKelvey School of Engineering, recently won a Diversity Fellowship Award from the Taylor Geospatial Institute, a collaboration that aims to advance geospatial technology.

Virologist Maritza Puray-Chavez, a staff scientist at the School of Medicine, has been named a 2023 Dr. Eddie Mendez Scholar by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.

WashU’s Heartland Initiative aims to expand educational access to students from small towns in Missouri and southern Illinois. This fall, a new team of rural admissions officers logged 10,000 miles traveling to 80 schools in rural Missouri and Illinois, some for the very first time.

WashU’s new network for Hispanic, Latinx and Latin American alumni is nearly 20 years in the making.

The Ann W. and Spencer T. Olin-Chancellor’s Fellowship will host the 2023 “She Leads Symposium @ WashU” from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 20 in Knight Hall’s Emerson Auditorium.
