WashU has celebrated Sandro Galea’s installation as dean, marking a major milestone for public health and the launch of its first new school in a century.

Dwight A. McBride has been installed as the inaugural Gerald Early Distinguished Professor of African & African American Studies in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. A lecture and reception to celebrate his appointment were held Dec. 10 in Holmes Lounge.

Cory Berkland has been named the inaugural Mark and Becky Ruhmann Levin Professor in the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University.

In recognition of a $50 million gift from Andrew and Barbara Taylor, the neurosurgery department at WashU Medicine has been named the Taylor Family Department of Neurosurgery.

Siteman Cancer Center’s new building for outpatient care will be named the Gary C. Werths Building. A transformative commitment by the late Werths and his husband, Richard Frimel, will support cancer research and medical student scholarships.

Li Yang was installed as the Albert Gordon Hill Professor of Physics in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. Yang delivered an installation address titled “Exploring Quantum Mechanics at Nanoscale with Petascale Computing.”

The university held its annual Founders Day celebration Nov. 9 to honor the outstanding achievements of some of the university’s most distinguished faculty, alumni and friends.

Joshua S. Yuan, chair of energy, environmental and chemical engineering at the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University, was installed as the Lucy & Stanley Lopata Professor Oct. 17.

Abram Van Engen, chair of the Department of English in Arts & Sciences, was recently installed as the Stanley Elkin Professor in the Humanities.

A ceremonial groundbreaking for the first building on the Danforth Campus dedicated to Arts & Sciences took place Oct. 8. The building will house some of the school’s premier departments and programs and serve as a cornerstone for scholarly and educational partnerships with other schools and units across campus.
