To the Washington University Community:
It is with tremendous sadness that we have been watching the tragedy unfold in Haiti following the devastating earthquake that occurred on Jan. 12. The images and stories emerging from a country that is such a close neighbor to the United States are heart-wrenching. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have suffered in this disaster.
As you might expect, the University has been aggressively working to identify direct members of the Washington University family — current students, faculty, and staff — who may have been in Haiti Jan. 12. As of today, we have been able to verify the safety of all members of our community. However, given the overall size and geographic diversity of our student and alumni network, it is likely that some will be affected directly or indirectly by this tragedy.
During this time of great devastation, people across the world are mobilizing support for the people of Haiti. You may be asking what you can do to help. I have requested that we include a link on our homepage for people who are interested in finding ways they can contribute to the relief efforts. We will do our best to keep this web site up-to-date with links to current opportunities for support.
With the beginning our new semester, I am reminded of the great spirit of caring and service to others that defines Washington University. As the needs of the people of Haiti emerge during the coming weeks, months, and years, I am confident that Washington University faculty, students, staff, and alumni with special expertise and interest will help with the relief efforts. I am proud and appreciative of all those willing to lend a hand during this time of great need.
Sincerely yours,
Mark S. Wrighton, Chancellor
