The Distinguished Alumni Awards recognize School of Architecture graduates who have demonstrated exceptional creativity, innovation, leadership and vision through their contributions to both the practice of architecture and the School. Recipients for 2004 will be Stephen N. Abend, FAIA, of Kansas City; Alan E. Goldberg, FAIA, of New Canaan, Conn.; Aseem Inam, Ph.D., of Ann Arbor, Mich.; Jack L. Nasar, Ph.D., of Columbus, Ohio; and Laurent J. Torno Jr. of St. Louis. (Laskey now now divides his time between St. Louis and Manistee, Mich.)
“One of the true measures of the quality of an academic institution is the professional attainment of its alumni,” said Dean Cynthia Weese, FAIA. “By this measure, Washington University’s School of Architecture ranks extremely high. Our alumni have had remarkable careers, achieving success in a wide range of endeavors.”
The School of Architecture at Washington University in St. Louis was founded in 1910 and in 1912 became one of eight founding members of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ASCA). In 1962, then-professors Roger Montgomery and Fumihiko Maki established one of the first graduate urban design programs in the nation. More recently, Maki has returned to campus to design the new Sam Fox Arts Center, a campus-wide collaboration for the study and promotion of visual culture, which will break ground on two new buildings April 14.
