Sports update Oct. 10: Volleyball sets NCAA Div. III record

The No. 2 volleyball team set a new Division III record for consecutive set victories in a 3-0 win over Lindenwood University at the Washington University Invitational Oct. 8.

The Bears also picked up a 3-0 win over Culver-Stockton College in the WU Invitational finale to improve to 21-0 overall and a perfect 63-0 in sets. The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh established the previous Division III record of 57-straight sets during the 2007 season.

WUSTL’s school record of 48 straight sets stood for 15 years after being set during the 1996 season. The Bears achieved the new school record with a sweep of New York University Oct. 2 at the first University Athletic Association (UAA) round robin.

The record was officially broken with the 25-13 opening set victory over Lindenwood. After winning the first two sets against Culver-Stockton the Bears’ consecutive set streak nearly came to an end in the third, but WUSTL survived four-straight Culver-Stockton shots at set point to rally all the way back for a 26-24 win, marking only the second time this season the Bears have seen a set last longer than 25 points.

Senior middle hitter Lauren Budde, junior setter Marilee Fisher and sophomore middle hitter Kaia Schwartz were each named to the Washington University Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Budde led the Bears with 42 kills while hitting .316, Fisher paced the offense with 77 assists to go along with 11 kills and 14 digs, and Schwartz hit an astounding .550 with 24 kills and a team high eight total blocks.

WUSTL (21-0) returns to action next weekend when it will travel to Rochester, N.Y. on Oct. 15-16 for the second UAA round robin of the season.

Women’s golf wins invitational

Sophomores Allyson Chee (83-79, 162, 16th place) and Andrea Hibbert (86-78, 164, 23rd place) each improved on day one as all five starters fired sub-par rounds on day two.

The team opens its 2012 spring season on March 24, 2012, at the Northern Kentucky Spring Invitational in Perry Park, Ky.

Men’s soccer picks up OT win at Emory

Senior Kevin Privalle scored his first goal of the season at an opportune time for the No. 9 men’s soccer team as his strike in double overtime lifted the Bears to a 2-1 victory at Emory University Oct. 9.

The Bears staked claim to an early lead, with senior Patrick McLean netting his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 16th minute. From that point the Eagles took control of the game offensively, finishing with a 26-7 advantage in shots, 7-4 in shots on goal and 7-1 in corner kicks.

Despite the disparity in scoring opportunities Emory did not get on the scoreboard until the 70th minute, when Andrew Natalino tied the score at 1-1 by converting a penalty kick.

WUSTL sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Jebson made four saves down the stretch, including three in the first overtime period, to keep the Bears in the game. Less than four minutes into the second overtime McLean sent a cross to Privalle who buried the game-winner — the third-game winning goal of his career.

WUSTL continues its three-game UAA road trip Friday, Oct. 14 at defending UAA champion New York University.

Winning streak snapped for women’s soccer

The No. 9 women’s soccer team had its five-game winning streak snapped with a 1-0 loss at No. 6 Emory University Oct. 9.

The WUSTL defense allowed 300 yards of total offense (199-passing; 101-rushing), and limited the Little Giants to 3-of-12 on third down. Senior Nick Hillard led the defensive unit with 10 tackles.
