One person’s trash, another’s musical instrument

Christopher Wilson (left), a freshman in the School of Engineering & Applied Science, demonstrates a musical instrument he built from found and recycled materials for members of ScrapArtsMusic, the acclaimed Vancouver percussion ensemble, in Edison Theatre Jan. 22. Wilson was one of four finalists in the Sounds of Sustainability competition, held in conjunction with a Jan. 23 concert by ScrapArtsMusic. Other finalists were freshman Jennifer Grant, December graduate Nick Speiser and senior Thomas Steins. “That’s disturbingly good,” Gregory Kozak (far right), founder, composer and artistic director of ScrapArtsMusic, said of Wilson’s arrangement. He was impressed overall with the competition. “The world needs more people making musical instruments,” Kozak said. “A lot of affection went into these, and the sheer lunatic fun of grabbing your neighbor’s trash gets big points from me.” Sounds of Sustainability was sponsored by Edison Theatre, the EnCouncil, Green Action, CS40 Sustainability and the Office of Sustainability.
