Spring social work lecture series begins Feb. 5

Leading experts in the fields of mental health services and civic service are part of the George Warren Brown School of Social Work’s spring lecture series.

“The Brown school is committed to presenting the most outstanding scholars and thought leaders in the field of social work and related disciplines,” said Barbara E. Levin, the series organizer and coordinator of the Alliance for Building Capacity at the social work school.

The first lecture, “Community Engagement in Mental Health Services Research: What Happens to Science and Scientists When Partners Come First?” will be given by Kenneth B. Wells, M.D., professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine and professor of health services at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Public Health. The talk, set for noon Feb. 5 in Brown Hall Lounge, is co-sponsored by the Center for Mental Health Services Research at Brown school.

The second talk will be:

• Teresa Sepúlveda Matus, Ph.D., co-chair of the graduate studies research division of the Department of Social Work at the Catholic University of Chile, will speak about “Civic Service in an Unequal World: Analyzing Four Paradoxes” at 1:10 p.m. March 5 in Brown Hall Lounge. This lecture is co-sponsored by the Center for Social Development at Brown school and will be in Spanish with English translation.
