The football team scored 34 first- half points en route to a 61-0 win over Westminster College in the Bears 2006 home opener Sept. 9 in front of 2,816 fans at Francis Field.

The Bears scored on the first play of the game after senior quarterback Pat McCarthy connected with junior Dan Cardone for a 64-yard touchdown pass. WUSTL made it 14-0 early in the second quarter after senior Robbie Sutkay capped a nine-play, 42-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run. Senior defensive lineman Drew Wethington intercepted Westminster quarterback Ryan Evers on the next Blue Jays possession and returned it 19 yards for the touchdown to extend the lead to 21-0.
The defense forced its fourth punt of the half, and the offense responded with a 13-play, 69-yard touchdown drive. Sutkay capped the drive with a one-yard plunge to push the lead to 28-0. An interception by senior Joe Shaughnessy set up a one-yard run by senior DaRonne Jenkins to make it 34-0 at half. WUSTL made it 41-0 early in the third quarter after senior quarterback Nick Henry connected with junior Scottie Guthrie for a 28-yard touchdown pass.
Junior Nick Buckvar, junior Ian English and freshman David Williams added rushing touchdowns to round out the scoring.

Volleyball now 8-0
The fifth-ranked volleyball team (8-0) went 4-0 en route to the National Invitational title Sept. 8-9 in St. Louis.
The Bears posted 3-0 shutouts in each of their four matches. Sophomores Nikki Morrison and Audra Janak, junior Emilie Walk and senior Whitney Smith were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Men’s soccer ties Rhodes
The 18th-ranked men’s soccer team (2-0-1) outshot Rhodes College 27-3, but could not muster a goal in a 0-0 double overtime tie Sept. 8 at Francis Field. The Bears outshot Rhodes 18-2 in the first 90 minutes, but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Junior Elie Zenner had the best scoring opportunity for the Bears with 2:19 left in the second overtime, but Rhodes goalkeeper Alex Margolin made a diving save to keep the score knotted at 0-0. Freshman goalkeeper John Smelcer made two saves as he posted the Bears’ third-consecutive shutout. Margolin made 16 saves for Rhodes, including six in the final 20 minutes of overtime play.
Women’s soccer 2-2
The 21st-ranked women’s soccer team (2-2) split a pair of games last week. Senior MeghanMarie Fowler-Finn scored the game-winning goal in the first overtime to lead the Bears to a 1-0 win at Aurora University Sept. 9.
The game-winning goal for Fowler-Finn was the ninth of her career, moving her into third place all-time. Junior Kim O’Keefe set up the game-winning goal at the 92:28 mark, just over two minutes into the first overtime.
She beat an Aurora defender to the end line, before crossing to Fowler-Finn at the far post, who one-timed it into the back of the net. The goal for Fowler-Finn was the first of the season and 29th of her career. On Sept. 10, the Bears outshot Illinois Wesleyan 14-9, but could not find the back of the net in a 1-0 overtime loss.
Runners ranked in poll
The men’s and women’s cross country teams are ranked in the first cross country poll conducted by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The WUSTL women check in at No. 2 in the country, while the men are ranked 24th. Both teams are coming off strong performances at the WUSTL Early Bird Meet last weekend in St. Louis. The men and women each placed first among Division III squads at the meet.
