The Bears football team is the top choice to repeat as University Athletic Association (UAA) champions. The team, looking to claim an unprecedented third straight outright conference title, garnered three first-place votes for a total of 15.5 points, narrowly edging Case Western Reserve University for the top spot. The Spartans earned 14 points, while Carnegie Mellon University was the coaches pick to finish third, earning 11.5 points. The University of Chicago and the University of Rochester respectively round out the top five. The Bears open the 2003 season on the road against Simpson College (Iowa) at 1 p.m. Sept. 6. The home opener is 1 p.m. Sept. 20 against Illinois Wesleyan University.

The No. 1-ranked volleyball team won three of four matches August 29-30 to earn a share of the Elmhurst Invitational title at Elmhurst College. Washington U. (3-1) cruised past Hope College 30-24, 30-19, 30-25 and followed that up with a 30-24, 30-19, 32-30 win against Wartburg College on Day 1, and they opened the second day of the tournament with a 30-27, 30-20, 26-30, 30-19 win against Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Despite losing a spirited match to host Elmhurst 27-30, 30-28, 24-30, 30-10, 15-17 in the afternoon, the Bears shared the title with Elmhurst and Wisconsin-Oshkosh, as each team finished play with a 3-1 record. For their efforts, senior Katie Quinn and junior Colleen Winter were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The men’s soccer team opened the 2003 season with a weekend split when they hosted the Washington University Classic at Francis Field. Sophomore Andrew Franklin gave WU a 1-0 win when he ended a scoreless tie in the 64th minute against Southwestern University in the final game of the tournament Aug. 31. Franklin scored his first goal of the season on a rebound after freshman Scott Frey’s shot was knocked down by Southwestern goalkeeper Jacob Henderson. The Bears outshot Southwestern 20-3 and had a 9-2 advantage on corner kicks. The Bears dropped their season-opener 5-0 against No. 3 Trinity Aug. 29.
The women’s soccer team managed a split of games this weekend at the Wheaton College Invitational in Wheaton, Ill. In the opening game of the tournament, Aug. 29, WUSTL dropped a 5-0 decision to No. 5 Wheaton. The next day, the Bears evened their record as they upset No. 10 DePauw University, 1-0. Senior Kim Raess scored the game-winner for the Bears in the 79th minute as she took a pass from freshman Meghan Marie Fowler-Finn and beat the DePauw goalkeeper with a shot from 20 yards out.

The men’s and women’s cross country team opened the 2003 season as it hosted the Washington University Early Bird Meet, a 5K race at Priory High School. Millikin University and Maryville University joined the Bears, and both Bears teams took first. On the men’s side, Washington U. finished with 16 points, while Millikin had 50 and Maryville notched 79. On the women’s side, WUSTL registered 22 points, while Maryville posted 48 and Millikin tallied 66. The Bears had eight of the top 10 mens finishers, including the top four. Greg Reindl and Darius Viet shared the title, each posting times of 16:47. Nate Quest and Brennen Bonner followed close behind (17:04). The Bears’ Maggie Grabow won the women’s draw in 19:46, well ahead of Maryville’s Maggie Conley (20:28). The Bears’ Mindy Kuhl placed third (20:33) and Andrea Moreland was fifth (21:06).
