The McKelvey School of Engineering recently honored alumni and friends for their service to the school, thought leadership, business acumen and impact.

Washington University in St. Louis has been selected to join the First Scholars Network by the Center for First-generation Student Success, an initiative of NASPA and The Suder Foundation. 

Gary Patti, in Arts & Sciences and the School of Medicine, has won the 2023 American Chemical Society Midwest Award. This annual award recognizes outstanding achievements in chemistry in the Midwest region.

Ten recent alumni earned Fulbright awards to travel abroad to conduct research or to teach English. The program recognizes talented scholars and leaders who are committed to promoting global collaboration and understanding through research and teaching.

Joseph Cherabie, MD, an assistant professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the School of Medicine, has been named a clinical ambassador for the national “Let’s Stop HIV Together” campaign, which is led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Students from the Department of Energy, Environmental & Chemical Engineering at the McKelvey School of Engineering competed in the WERC Environmental Design Contest as a part of their environmental engineering capstone course, winning second place in the bench-scale competition.

Washington University in St. Louis women’s track and field team runner Emma Kelley won the 800-meter national title May 27 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Rochester, N.Y.

The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation has named Washington University rising senior Avital Isakov an Astronaut Scholar. The prestigious fellowship is for college juniors and seniors who are studying science, technology, engineering or mathematics.

Students in the “Philanthropy Lab” course granted $40,000 to four local nonprofit groups. The course, offered by Arts & Sciences in partnership with the Gephardt Institute, gives students a theoretical and practical understanding of philanthropy today. 

Darrell Hudson, an associate professor at the Brown School, will become director of the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Equity at Washington University in St. Louis, effective July 1. Hudson has served as an associate director for the past year.
