A pair of events in Hong Kong and Mumbai helped to further strengthen Washington University’s impact in the Asia-Pacific region and showcase its world-leading, collaborative research.

A Washington University in St. Louis expert in African policy says Nigeria’s upcoming presidential vote is a consequential event, one that will determine critical steps forward for Africa’s most populous country and largest economy.

Michael Sherraden, director of the Center for Social Development at the Brown School,  and Li Zou, international director, represented Washington University in St. Louis during a conference on “The 30th Anniversary of the Re-establishment of Social Work in China.”

The Women’s Bakery, which provides access to education and employment for women in East Africa through the building of bakeries, won Washington University in St. Louis’ 2018 Global Impact Award on Oct. 29.

Addressing global challenges in a spirit of cooperation and collaboration was the prevailing theme of the 7th McDonnell Academy International Symposium, co-hosted by Washington University in St. Louis and Tsinghua University, and held in Beijing Oct. 11-14.

Bruno Sinopoli, a renowned expert in cyber-physical system and control systems, has been named chair of the Preston M. Green Department of Electrical & Systems Engineering in the School of Engineering & Applied Science at Washington University in St. Louis, effective Jan. 1.
