Ackert Walkway is an important University City pedestrian corridor, running north from Delmar Boulevard to Vernon Avenue and connecting the Loop arts and entertainment district with the surrounding Parkview Gardens neighborhood.
On Saturday, March 26, six multidisciplinary teams from the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts will present design concepts for revitalizing the walkway as part of a public art workshop titled “Ackert Walkway: Designing for the Future.”
The workshop is an outgrowth of a graduate course, titled “Public Space and City Life — Ackert Walkway Case Study,” jointly taught by Ron Fondaw, professor of sculpture, and John Hoal, associate professor of architecture and chair of the Master of Urban Design Program. Events will begin at 1:30 p.m. with a stroll on Ackert Walkway. Presentation of concepts will begin at 2 p.m., after which the floor will open to public comments and critiques.
The workshop is free and open to the public and takes place in Parkview Towers, 701 Westgate Ave. Parking is available on street and at All Saints Catholic Church, at the corner of Westgate and Clemens.
For more information, call (314) 935-9300.
Both the course and the workshop are part of a larger planning effort, titled “A Vision for Parkview Gardens…Connecting People Place and Parks,” which is funded in part by the University City, the U.S. Departments of Housing and Urban Development and Transportation, Parkview Gardens Association, Washington University, Great Rivers Greenway and other local partners.
