Black Anthology 2011 kicks off Black History Month

Black Anthology, the student-written, student-performed and student-produced cultural arts show celebrating black culture, will present its annual showcase at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 11 and 12, in Edison Theatre.

This year’s theme is “Double Consciousness.”

Students perform during last year’s Black Anthology.

“Black Anthology is a wonderful kick-off to Black History Month as it shows the issues of American society from a distinctive African-American perspective,” says DeMarco Mitchener, director of Black Anthology 2011 and a senior in Arts & Sciences.

Black Anthology was started in 1989 by Marcia Hayes-Harris and has regularly been held at the beginning of February.

The event showcases issues pertaining to and dealing with the African-American community and seeks to encourage discussion of these issues.

“Shows in the past have dealt with all sorts of issues, including discrimination, homophobia, relationships and many more,” Mitchener says. “Without giving away what is going to happen, I can tell you that this year’s show deals much more explicitly with how people quest for a sense of self-identification within a larger society.”

Tickets are $8 with a WUSTL student ID and $10 for general admission. For more information and group ticket rates, contact the Edison Theatre Box Office at (314) 935-6543.
