Carlson heads new hospitalist medicine division in pediatrics

The Department of Pediatrics has created a Division of Hospitalist Medicine, naming Douglas Carlson, M.D., as its director.

Although hospitalist medicine has been a section of the pediatrics department for more than 15 years, the division was formally created in September.

Carlson, professor of pediatrics, will oversee 37 faculty in the division, said Alan L. Schwartz, Ph.D., M.D., the Harriet B. Spoehrer Professor and head of Pediatrics at the School of Medicine.

“Doug is a superior clinician and educator,” Schwartz said. “He also is an accomplished administrator who is nationally recognized for his leadership of our program.”

The pediatrics hospitalist medicine division has grown significantly since it was established by F. Sessions Cole, M.D., vice chair of the Department of Pediatrics, to provide clinical care and medical student and resident education. Its services now include inpatient care for pediatric patients at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Missouri Baptist Medical Center and Progress West Healthcare Center.

In addition, the division is responsible for the emergency departments at Missouri Baptist and Progress West and the newborn nurseries at Missouri Baptist, Progress West and Barnes-Jewish Hospital. The program also oversees the sedation service, urgent care within the St. Louis Children’s Hospital Emergency Room (C.A.R.E.S.) and the transport team at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

Hospitalists also help referring physicians with the admissions process at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

Carlson joined the School of Medicine faculty in 1987 after completing an internship and residency at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. He also is director of Children’s C.A.R.E.S. at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, director of pediatric emergency medicine at Missouri Baptist Medical Center and co-coursemaster of pediatric medical student education at the School of Medicine.
