Men’s Tennis Extends Winning Streak to Nine

The 10th-ranked Washington University posted victories over No. 28 University of Chicago (7-2) and Coe College (9-0) on Sunday afternoon at the Tao Tennis Center. The two wins extended the Bears winning streak to nine matches, the fourth longest in school history.

The Bears won two of three doubles matches against Chicago, who is ranked No. 8 in the Central Region. Sophomores Charlie Cutler and Chris Hoeland won at No. 1, 8-4, while junior Charlie Howard and freshman John Watts posted an 8-4 win at No. 3.

In singles, the Bears captured five straight-set victories. Cutler (No. 1, 7-6, 6-0), Watts (No. 2, 6-1, 6-3), freshman Danny Levy (No. 4, 6-1, 6-0), Howard (7-6, 6-4) and freshman Nirmal Choradia (No. 6, 6-1, 6-4) each picked up wins.

The Bears won all nine matches against Coe, who was ranked No. 15 in the Central Region. Cutler highlighted the victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Ryan Yao at No. 1 singles. Yao is ranked No. 12 in the Central Region, and has suffered just four losses at the top spot. Watts posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles, extending his winning streak to 14 matches. He is 24-4 overall in his rookie season, and 14-2 in dual matches.

Washington U. also posted a victory over University of Texas-Tyler on Saturday afternoon at the Vetta Hampshire Racquet Club.

Washington University (13-3) has two matches at home next week as the Bears prepare for the University Athletic Association (UAA) championships on April 27-29 in Cleveland, Ohio. The Bears host Principia College on Tue., April 17 at 4 p.m., and Division II Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on Wed., April 18 at 4 p.m.
