Dan Morgenstern, director of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University, will speak on “The Great Jazz Schism” at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14.

Morgenstern has led the Institute of Jazz Studies, one of the world’s most extensive jazz archives, since 1976. A former editor of Down Beat magazine, he has won six Grammy awards for best album notes and served as a senior advisor to Ken Burns 10-part PBS series Jazz. Earlier this year he was named a “Jazz Master” by the National Endowment for the Arts — a designation The New York Times calls “the nation’s highest jazz honor.”
Morgenstern is the author of hundreds of articles and reviews and has contributed to numerous anthologies and references works. His own books include Living With Jazz (2004) and Jazz People (1977), both of which earned the Deems Taylor Award “for outstanding print, broadcast and new media coverage of music” from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
