Three local arts organizations have teamed up to host Contemporary Night Out, an evening of short, informative programs focusing on the world of contemporary art.
The free event, which takes place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, is sponsored by the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University in St. Louis, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis and The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts.
Programs will begin at the Kemper Art Museum, located on Washington University’s Danforth campus, then proceed to the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis in Grand Center before ending next door at The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts.
Each stop will feature food and drinks as well as a short interactive presentation exploring particular aspects of contemporary art and its impact on current culture.
“The short and casual format of each program lends itself well to relaxed discussion among the presenters and participants,” says Allison Taylor, manager of education programs at the Kemper Art Museum. “The goal is to provide information in a manner that is welcoming to those who are interested in contemporary art but are unsure of how to approach it.”

6 p.m.: How to Look at Contemporary Art
This 15-20 minute program — hosted by Allison Taylor, manager of education programs at the Kemper Art Museum, and Tuan Nguyen, education manager at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis — will provide insight on how to approach and make meaning of contemporary art.
Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (galleries open until 9 p.m.)
7–9 p.m.: Food trucks on site
7 p.m.: Current Trends in Contemporary Art
This 15-20 minute program — hosted by Dominic Molon, chief curator at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, and Meredith Malone, associate curator at the Kemper Art Museum — will examine current trends and future directions in contemporary art.
The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts (galleries open until 9 pm)
7:30–8:30 p.m.: Desserts on the shared CAM/Pulitzer courtyard
8 p.m.: The Artist as Curator
This 15-20 minute program will explore the unique vision of an artist as curator. Emily Rauh Pulitzer will discuss the curatorial work of artist Gedi Sibony in the Pulitzer’s current exhibition, In the Still Epiphany. She will discuss the exhibition in light of how it relates to Sibony’s work as an artist, and how his methods differ from traditional curatorial practice.

Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum
