Take the WUSTL Sustainability pledge

Washington University students, faculty and staff can show their commitment to sustainability by taking the WUSTL Sustainability Pledge at SustainabilityPledge.wustl.edu.

The pledge asks those who sign it to live more sustainably at their workplace, school and home by reducing personal energy consumption, producing less waste, conserving resources and recycling.

The pledge contains 24 points and takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.

Those who take the pledge will receive an e-mail containing their pledge responses and a link to download an e-mail signature that community members can include in e-mails to show support for sustainable living.

Severe weather alerts posted on WUSTL emergency website

Severe weather watches and warnings from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Weather Service will automatically be posted on the university’s emergency website, emergency.wustl.edu, announced Mark Bagby, emergency management coordinator.

The emergency website will show the severe weather alerts on the right-hand side of the page. It will display the most recent watch or warning in a box and provides a link to view all active weather alerts.

Emergency.wustl.edu is the primary source of university information before and during a crisis, Bagby says.

The website contains information about what to do in particular emergency situations, such as an earthquake, fire or violence on campus. It also features links that faculty, staff, students, parents and others can follow to provide the university with contact information so they can be alerted quickly in a crisis.


Lunch and learn at Kemper this summer

This summer, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum presents the Lunch & Learn program, a popular series of lunchtime tours open to any campus department or group.

Designed to last about an hour, each session begins with a buffet lunch, during which education staff provide a brief introduction to the museum, its history and collections.

Recycling fact sheet posted on wustl.edu/sustain

WUSTL has many initiatives in place to ensure that the university is diverting as much waste as possible — from batteries to food to used cooking oil — from the landfill.

To help keep the university community updated on the recycling efforts of the university and its partners, the Recycling Committee and Office of Sustainability have partnered to develop a summary of WUSTL’s many recycling initiatives, including single-stream recycling and RecycleMania. The facts sheet is posted on wustl.edu/initiatives/sustain and can be found by visiting wustl.edu/initiatives/sustain/recycling.html.

“We hope that this will be a helpful resource as we continue to develop the university’s recycling infrastructure and make our campuses and community greener places,” says Deborah Howard, interim director of sustainability.

Medical school farmers’ market open for business

Purchase fresh produce and dairy products at the farmers’ market at the Washington University Medical Center every Thursday.

The market opened for the season April 7. It will be open every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., unless a vendor sells out, in the Ellen S. Clark Hope Plaza in front of the School of Medicine Bookstore.

Young Scientist Program celebrates anniversary June 6

The Young Scientist Program will mark its 20th anniversary with a day-long symposium at 8:30 a.m. Monday, June 6, at the School of Medicine. The program, still entirely run by more than 100 graduate and medical students, invites fellow students, alumni, teachers, scientists and the public to its symposium to mark 20 years of success.

Keynote speakers are Bruce Alberts, PhD, professor emeritus of biochemistry and biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco, and editor-in-chief of Science; Yolanda George, deputy director and program director of the American Association for the Advancement of Science education programs; and Barbara Schaal, PhD, the Mary-Dell Chilton Distinguished Professor of Biology at Washington University and a mentor for YSP’s Summer Focus program.

Mallinckrodt Bank of America branch to close April 29-July 4

Bank of America’s full-service branch in the Mallinckrodt Center on the Danforth Campus closed at 2 p.m. Friday, April 29, through Monday, July 4, during its relocation to the Mallinckrodt Center’s first floor, east end.

The bank is relocating from the second floor due to construction and renovation in the Mallinckrodt Center.

The bank will reopen Tuesday, July 5, and continue its normal business hours of 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The bank operates in January, February, March (except for spring break), April, May, July, August, September, October, November and December until finals end. The bank normally is closed during the month of June.

The Bank of America ATM outside of Mallinckrodt Center will remain open during the relocation, with the exception of a few hours after 3 p.m. April 29 and then again at a later date during rerouting of electronics. The ATM screen will show “Temporarily Unavailable” while closed.

19th annual W Club golf scramble June 13

The Department of Athletics will host the 19th annual W Club golf scramble on Monday, June 13, at the Meadowbrook Country Club in Ballwin, Mo.

Entry fee is $325 per golfer, which includes greens fees, golf cart, driving range, lunch, cocktails, dinner and awards. The festivities will begin at 10:30 a.m., with the proceeds benefiting WUSTL’s student-athlete programs.
