Researchers may have found a new form of chlorophyll, the pigment that plants, algae and cyanobacteria use to obtain energy from light through photosynthesis. Preliminary findings published August 19 in Science suggest that the newly discovered molecule, dubbed chlorophyll f, has a distinct chemical composition when compared with the four known forms of chlorophyll. Washington University in St. Louis photosynthesis expert Robert Blankenship, says the discovery is significant. Link to Article

Dr. Ellen Binder’s research has been on exercise interventions in frail elderly populations. Now, Binder, along with her Washington University School of Medicine co-investigator, Dr. Mark McDaniel, is studying healthy people – specifically, whether physical and mental exercises can help healthy older adults live better. He will discuss “What’s New on Mars?” at the Odyssey Theater under the Arch before the audience adjourns upstairs and outdoors to peer through telescopes set up by SLAS. Link to Article
