Juniors (from left) Lujia Zhang, a biomedical engineering major; Jeffrey Radlauer, a political science major in Arts & Sciences; and Josh Barbeau, an Engish major in Arts & Sciences, build a replica of the Gateway Arch on the South 40 Swamp in the Wash U Build Extravanganza March 27. Ten teams of WUSTL undergraduates participated in the team-building exercise sponsored by the campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity. The event was designed to raise awareness of the group’s mission of building decent, affordable housing for low-income families around the world. In order to get the cardboard and duct tape to build their structures, teams first had to perform tasks and answer questions regarding Habitat for Humanity, says Travis McAllister, interim coordinator for community service in the Community Service Office. “Students learned it takes more than ideas to build a house; it takes teamwork,” McAllister says. Besides the Arch, McAllister says other student groups built a replica of the Sydney Opera House and a castle.
