Look of WUSTL’s Hilltop Campus changes as it prepares for new ‘Danforth Campus’ name

WHAT: The look of the Washington University Hilltop Campus is changing as it prepares to name the campus the “Danforth Campus” in recognition of the role that Chancellor Emeritus William H. “Bill” Danforth, the late Elizabeth “Ibby” Gray Danforth, the Danforth family and the Danforth Foundation have played in the evolution of Washington University. An official “Dedication of the Danforth Campus” ceremony will be Sept. 17, when the new name takes effect.

Today workers are installing a granite medallion — 16 feet in diameter — in the center of Brookings Hall Plaza, which is directly in front of the Brookings Hall archway. Next week, workers will be completing construction of the plaza, which will include benches and bronze plaques recognizing the Danforth contributions.

Also, masonry workers are installing new monuments reflecting the Hilltop Campus’ name change at all four corners of the campus. Workers also recently hung banners signifying the Danforth Campus on street lights surrounding campus.

WHERE: Brookings Hall Plaza, which is directly in front of the Brookings Hall archway, for the medallion installation and the plaza construction.

Limestone monuments marking the corners of the Danforth Campus that are being put in place next week are at the corner of Forest Park Parkway and Skinker and at the corner of Forsyth and Big Bend boulevards. Two new monuments that have recently been put into place are at the corner of Skinker and Forsyth and at the corner of Big Bend and Forest Park Parkway.

WHEN: This afternoon and evening, Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, for the medallion installation in Brookings Plaza. Work on the rest of the plaza will continue through next week.

Starting next Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 29 and 30, for the two remaining campus corner monuments to be put into place.
