WashU alumni are writing and illustrating the books you wish you could have read as a kid — increasing diversity one picture book at a time.

Aki Ishida, an associate professor and interim associate director of the School of Architecture at Virginia Tech, has been named director of the College of Architecture and Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis.

The Sam Fox School will present WashU’s 95th Annual Fashion Design Show April 27 in Ridgley Hall, Holmes Lounge. One of the oldest such shows in the nation, the event will feature dozens of models wearing scores of outfits that together explore the intersection of clothing and culture.

The Mississippi River defines St. Louis, shaping its life and culture. But today, for many St. Louisans, that connection has been broken, says Derek Hoeferlin, chair of landscape architecture in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis.

Aggie Toppins, an associate professor and chair of undergraduate design in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, has won the 2023 Communication Design Educator Award in teaching from Design Incubation.

Kahlil Robert Irving (MFA ’17) will present “Archaeology of the Present,” a 2,000-square-foot installation exploring our relationship to the city street, at Washington University’s Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum beginning Feb. 23.

“Santiago Sierra: 52 Canvases Exposed to the Mexico City Air” will open Feb. 23 at the Kemper Art Museum. The installation highlights the contaminants — the ozone, carbon monoxide, and sulfur and nitrogen oxides — that can slowly but surely poison urban environments.

Legendary shoe designer and entrepreneur Stuart Weitzman will discuss his design philosophy and experience building an internationally renowned company at a free event Feb. 8 open to the WashU community.

Artists Judith Barry and Kahlil Robert Irving, architects Fernanda Canales and Michael Maltzan, landscape architect Julie Bargmann and philosopher Timothy Morton are among the internationally renowned creative professionals who will discuss their work for the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts’ spring Public Lecture Series.
