Two Brown School students, Jilly dos Santos and Lauren Chacón, have been selected for the Council of Social Work Education’s prestigious Minority Fellowship Program.

Jason Jabbari, of the university’s Social Policy Institute, received a $325,373 grant from the Smith Richardson Foundation to examine social mobility and equity in certificate and apprenticeship programs.

Nancy Morrow-Howell, the Betty Bofinger Brown Distinguished Professor of Social Policy at the Brown School and director of the Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging in the Institute for Public Health, is the recipient of the 2022 Maxwell A. Pollack Award for Contributions to Health Aging from the Gerontological Society of America.

A deep dive by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine and the Brown School found gaping health disparities resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. The study, which looked at St. Louis County residents, shows that Black women suffered disproportionately higher rates of employment loss and food insecurity.

Lindsay Stark, a professor at the Brown School, has received a one-year $435,000 grant from UNICEF for a project titled “Intervention Review and Implementation Research to Address Gender-based Violence in Emergencies.”

Brown School social work PhD student Woodjerry Louis has been selected to participate in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s prestigious Health Policy Research Scholars program. Louis is the only Missouri student in the cohort of 40 students from across the country.

HomeGrown STL, a Brown School program aimed at improving community-level capacity to reduce inequality in Black adolescents’ healthy transition to adulthood, has won an inaugural Social Justice Innovation Award from financial firm Morgan Stanley and the nonprofit Centri Tech Foundation.

Kim Thuy Seelinger, research associate professor at the Brown School, participated in a United Nations General Assembly event, “Ensuring Accountability for Sexual Violence and Other Violations of International Humanitarian Law,” Sept. 21 in New York.

As schools around the country have ramped up security efforts in response to recent school shootings, a new study from the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis suggests that increased surveillance is having a detrimental impact on academic performance.

Fred Ssewamala, the William E. Gordon Distinguished Professor at the Brown School, received a five-year $3.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to lead a study on intervention strategies for HIV treatments among Ugandan youth. The study could advance intervention science for HIV care globally.
