The Women’s Society of Washington University presented the Harriet K. Switzer Leadership Award and the Elizabeth Gray Danforth Scholarship to three exceptional students at its annual membership meeting April 12 in Knight Hall’s Emerson Auditorium.

Washington University’s 162nd Commencement is 9 a.m. Monday, May 15, on Francis Olympic Field. The university will award degrees to approximately 3,500 members of the Class of 2023, and Sterling K. Brown, a St. Louis native and an award-winning actor and producer, will deliver the Commencement address.

Washington University is a member of the Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education, an initiative of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The university is committed to addressing and preventing sexual harassment and maintaining an environment where everyone can feel safe working and learning.

George Pepe, who taught in the Department of Classics in Arts & Sciences for more than 50 years, died May 2 while in hospice near his home in San Diego. He was 83.

Jr-Shin Li, a professor of systems science and mathematics at the McKelvey School of Engineering, has been named the Newton R. and Sarah Louisa Glasgow Wilson Professor of Engineering.

Rohit Pappu at the McKelvey School of Engineering received a National Science Foundation grant to study the impact of charge regulation on intrinsically disordered proteins.

Olin Business School honored seven outstanding alumni for their service to the school, thought leadership, business acumen and impact at two awards ceremonies in April.

The Whittemore House will be open to non-members during Commencement weekend. The club will serve lunch Friday and Saturday and a prix fixe dinner at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m Saturday.

Paul Taghert, a professor of neuroscience at the School of Medicine, received an Outstanding Investigator Award of nearly $2 million from the National Institutes of General Medical Sciences to study how the circadian clock orchestrates multiple biological cycles that operate at different phases.

Six exceptional undergraduates were recognized with Department of Biology awards, including a new prize named in honor of Garland Allen, who advocated for racial and gender equality in the biological sciences.
