William Acree, associate professor of Spanish in Arts & Sciences, has won a Best Book Award from the 19th Century Section of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA). The award was announced May15, in conjunction with LASA’s 2020 International Congress.

The McDonnell International Scholars Academy has issued a call for research proposals to investigate public health challenges that stem from infectious diseases, including COVID-19.

Mungai Mutonya, teaching professor of African and African American studies in Arts & Sciences, has received a fellowship from the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program.

Anna Preus, a doctoral candidate in English in Arts & Sciences at Washington University, has won a Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies. 

The Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement has announced this year’s recipients of the Gerry and Bob Virgil Ethic of Service Award. The annual honor recognizes community members who exemplify a character of service and engagement with the St. Louis region.

Nathan Vedal, assistant professor of East Asian languages and cultures in Arts & Sciences, has received a fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies. Vedal also recently received a Mellon Fellowship from Princeton University’s Institute for Advanced Study.

Portland, Ore.-based artist Lyndon Barrois Jr., and artist Wyndi DeSouza, who divides her time between St. Louis and Newark, N.J., have won the 2020 Stone & DeGuire Contemporary Art Awards.

Senior Libby Evan and junior Jina Hyun are representing the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis in Varsity Art XXIV. The annual exhibition, which opens Feb. 28, is hosted by Art St. Louis and features work by undergraduate and graduate students from St. Louis college- and university-level art programs.
