Bill Kohn: Journey

The Bruno David Gallery, 3721 Washington Blvd., will present Bill Kohn: Journey, an exhibition of work by the late professor emeritus of painting, Nov. 17-Dec. 16.

Kohn, who taught at Washington University for almost four decades, was known for large, colorful landscapes based on his travels around the world, to sites such as the Grand Canyon, Machu Picchu in Peru, the Duomo in Florence and Jaiselmer in India. In his final body of work, begun in 2002 and continued until his death in November 2004, Kohn returned his focus to St. Louis, painting the landscape of historic and modern buildings around Grand Boulevard.

Kohn earned a bachelor’s degree in painting from Washington University in 1953 and joined the faculty of the School of Art faculty in 1963. His work is included in numerous public and private collections, and has been featured in one-person shows at the Saint Louis Art Museum; the University of Baroda in India; and The Alcazar in Seville, Spain, among many others. In 2002, he received the Missouri Arts Award, the state’s highest honor for achievement in the arts.

Following a tradition that Kohn established, the opening reception — which runs from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17 — will include the debut of a new multi-media piece, Grand Eloquence, conceived before the artist’s death and completed by three of Kohn’s longtime collaborators: the composer Rich O’Donnell, the poet Anna Lum and the photographer Dale Dufer.

Regular gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and by appointment. For more information, call (314) 531-3030 or visit brunodavidgallery.com.
