Farewell

Bill Kohn, a longtime art professor who passed away in November at the age of 73, was renowned for color-drenched paintings based on extensive travels to India, Guatemala, France, Italy and the Americas. Two exhibitions of Kohn’s work are on view at The William & Florence Schmidt Art Center at Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville. Bill Kohn: Shrines highlights en plein air — or on-location — sketches of churches, temples, mosques and other spiritual places. Bill Kohn: A Retrospective features large-scale acrylic paintings often based on those sketches. Pictured is Rancho de Taos Mission (1976), a watercolor-and-graphite study of the famous New Mexico church. The exhibit runs through Sept. 16. For more information, go online to swicfoundation.com.
