Media briefing Oct. 4: Preparations proceed for second presidential debate on Oct. 8

WHO: Steve Givens, chair of Washington University’s Presidential Debate Steering Committee; Mark Wrighton, Chancellor of Washington University; John Schael, director of athletics; Ralph Thaman, associate vice chancellor of Facilities, Planning & Management; George Lueders, project manager for SBC Communications Inc.

WHAT: Briefing on physical and technological transformation of Washington University’s Field House into a “Town Hall” setting for the second presidential debate on Oct. 8. Givens and Wrighton will discuss university-wide preparations for the debate and its significance to the campus community. Schael will provide background on the Athletic Complex’s storied history, which includes the 1904 Olympic Games and the 1992 and 2000 presidential debates. Thaman will offer an overview of facility and site preparations. Lueders will address installation of telecommunications services for voice, data and Internet for media and candidate teams. Tours of the Athletic Complex will be available after the briefing.

WHERE: Washington University’s Athletic Complex, near the intersection of Forsyth and Big Bend. Take Olympian Way north from Forsyth Boulevard, proceed past the athletic field to a security checkpoint where a media ID will be required. Limited media parking will be available on a first-come, first-served basis near the Athletic Complex.

WHEN: 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4. Please allot time for traffic congestion in area and for clearing security checkpoint.

IMPORTANT: Media ID will be required.

Note: After the briefing, representatives from Washington University and SBC Communications will be available to answer specific questions about telecommunications, networking and electrical systems.
