Researchers at the McKelvey School of Engineering received a three-year $570,746 grant from the National Science Foundation to support their work to understand the fundamental mechanisms that underpin interactions between nerve cells, or neurons, and nanoparticles, which can be used to both sense and stimulate neurons.

The studies that are frequently touted as proof of concept for a shortened work week are riddled with statistical flaws, according to Olin Business School’s Liberty Vittert, who testified March 13 before the U.S. Senate Committee on Heath, Education, Labor and Pensions.

Henric Krawczynski was installed as the Wilfred R. and Ann Lee Konneker Distinguished Professor of Physics in Arts & Sciences during a ceremony Feb. 28 at the Whittemore House. His installation lecture was titled “The Bright Side of Black Holes.”

Physicist Jeff Gillis-Davis in Arts & Sciences is leading a team that will develop and test an instrument to measure the chemistry of rocks, minerals, soil and ices on the surface of the Moon. The device is small enough to be carried by a rover or other robotic explorer.

Aggie Toppins, an associate professor and chair of undergraduate design in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, has won the 2023 Communication Design Educator Award in teaching from Design Incubation.

The 18th annual African Film Festival returns to Washington University in St. Louis March 22-24. Highlights include screenings of “Omen,” an award-winning drama from the Democratic Republic of Congo; “Banel and Adama,” a love story from Senegal; and the youth matinee featuring five short films including the Annie Award-winning animated short “Enkai.”

Senior Emma Kelley, of the No. 2 Washington University in St. Louis women’s track and field team, turned in a historic time at the Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships March 9. The overall team finished second.

Renée Shellhaas, MD, the David T. Blasingame Professor of Neurology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been awarded the Child Neurology Society’s 2024 Hower Award.
