The earliest newborn heartbeat. The earliest cerebral pulse. The first human brain waves to exit the solar system.
In “The Pulse Armed With a Pen” (2014), Houston-based artist Dario Robleto collects seven milestone recordings on custom-printed vinyl, along with liner notes, digital prints, headphones and a media player. The result is a box set like no other — an intimate and lovingly crafted chronicle of the sound of life itself.
At 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, Robleto will deliver the Arthur L. and Sheila Prensky Island Press Visiting Artist Lecture for the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis.
The talk, part of the school’s fall Public Lecture Series, is one of 13 presentations this semester by nationally and internationally known artists, architects, curators and designers.
The series will begin Wednesday, Sept. 14, with architect Liu Xiaodu, principal and cofounder of URBANUS Architecture & Design. Other highlights will include visit celebrated visual artist, and Sam Fox alumnus, Laylah Ali (Oct. 13); landscape architect Nancy Owens (Oct. 10); legendary illustrator Seymour Chwast (Oct. 24); and architects Amale Andraos (Oct. 20) and Philippe Rahm (Nov. 9).
All events are free and open to the public and begin at 6:30 p.m. in Steinberg Hall Auditorium, unless otherwise noted. Each will be preceded by a reception at 6 p.m.
Steinberg Hall is located near the intersection of Skinker and Forsyth boulevards, immediately adjacent to Givens Hall and the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum. For more information, call 314-935-9300 or visit samfoxschool.wustl.edu.
