To promote and strengthen a culture that proactively supports a safe and respectful learning, working and living environment, Washington University in St. Louis has appointed Jessica W. Kennedy, JD, to the newly created role of Title IX coordinator, according to Lorraine Goffe-Rush, vice chancellor for human resources, and Sharon Stahl, vice chancellor for students. The appointment is effective March 17.
A graduate of the Washington University School of Law and a commercial litigator with more than 13 years of trial experience, Kennedy most recently worked for the law firm of Berry & Maxson in Chesterfield, where she represented businesses and individuals in a variety of commercial and employment litigation matters. She prepared and tried cases in state and federal court, and she represented and counseled clients regarding workplace issues, including Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Missouri Commission on Human Rights proceedings.
In her new role at WUSTL, Kennedy will be responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of meaningful efforts to comply with Title IX legislation, regulation and case law. Title IX is a part of the Education Amendments of 1972 that protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs and activities.
“This position is of vital importance to Washington University, and I’m thrilled Jessica Kennedy has accepted our offer,” said Provost Holden Thorp, PhD. “She will bring energy and perspective to our efforts to not only comply with Title IX, but also to create an environment that supports survivors of sexual assault and creates a safe and nurturing environment for our entire community.”
Working in conjunction with the Office of the General Counsel, Kennedy will ensure that the university is in compliance with Title IX law, and she also will conduct related outreach and education for faculty and staff, with particular emphasis on those in leadership roles and those who work closely with students.
Kennedy earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from Tulane University in 1992 and her law degree from Washington University in 1997. She currently serves as president of the Women Lawyers’ Association of Greater St. Louis and is an active participant in numerous civic organizations, including Habitat for Humanity St. Louis and HotCity Theatre.
