Commencement celebrations begin Wednesday

Beginning Wednesday, May 15, more than a dozen distinguished individuals will speak at Commencement-related events for graduates and their friends and families.

The weeklong celebration culminates at 8:30 a.m. Friday, May 17, with the 152nd Commencement ceremony in Brookings Quadrangle in which more than 2,700 candidates will receive degrees. Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker, credited with helping revitalize New Jersey’s largest city, will give the 2013 Commencement address.

Other speakers and events this week are:

Mary Jo Bang, professor of English in Arts & Sciences, for the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts College of Art/Graduate School of Art Recognition Ceremony at 8 p.m. May 16 in Graham Chapel. Student speaker is Kelsey Taylor Brod, a bachelor’s candidate in fine arts.

Richard A. Chole, MD, PhD, Lindburg Professor and head of the Department of Otolaryngology, for the Program in Audiology and Communications Sciences Recognition Ceremony and Diploma Distribution at 1 p.m. May 17 in Connor Auditorium, Farrell Teaching and Learning Center.

Edelle Field-Fote, PhD, vice chair and graduate program director for the Department of Physical Therapy, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, for the Program in Physical Therapy at 1:30 p.m. May 17 in the Khorassan Ballroom, The Chase Park Plaza, 212 N. Kingshighway. The faculty speaker is Shirley Sahrmann, PhD, professor of physical therapy, of cell biology and physiology and of neurology; the student speaker is Daniel Braughton, candidate for a doctorate in physical therapy.

Wayne Fields, PhD, the Lynne Cooper Harvey Distinguished Professor of English in Arts & Sciences, for the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences Hooding and Recognition Ceremony at 11:30 a.m. May 17 in the E. Desmond Lee Concert Hall, 560 Music Center, 560 Trinity Ave. in University City.

Karl Grice, BA ’74, MArch/MSW ’76, principal/owner, Grice Group Architects, for the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts College of Architecture/Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design Diploma Ceremony in the Brookings Drive Mall immediately following the main Commencement ceremony. With remarks by honorary degree recipient Juhani Pallasmaa. Student speakers are David Benard Hamm, a bachelor of science candidate in architecture, and Reid Alan Caudill, a master’s candidate in architecture.

Sandeep Jauhar, MD, PhD, cardiologist and director of the Heart Failure Program at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and author of Intern: A Doctor’s Initiation, for the School of Medicine at 3 p.m. May 17 in the Ferrara Theatre at America’s Center, 701 Convention Plaza. Student speaker is Ignacio Becerra-Licha, class president, candidate for a doctor of medicine.

Lisa Lewin, BSBA ’96, president of teacher education at Pearson Education, will speak at Olin Business School’s Undergraduate Diploma and Awards ceremony at 11:30 a.m. May 17 in the Athletic Complex Field House.

David Newburger, of Newburger & Vossmeyer in St. Louis, co-director of the Starkloff Disability Institute and commissioner of the City of St. Louis Office on the Disabled, for the Program in Occupational Therapy Diploma Ceremony at 1 p.m. May 17 in Graham Chapel. Faculty speaker is Kerri Morgan, instructor of occupational therapy and neurology; student speakers are Elizabeth Williams, candidate for a master’s in occupational therapy, and Erin Sanborn, candidate for a doctorate in occupational therapy.

Gregory A. Hewett, member of the law school’s National Council and senior managing director in Blackstone Advisory Partners LP, for the School of Law at Mudd Field immediately following the main Commencement ceremony. Student speaker is Zachary A. Greenberg, candidate for a juris doctorate.

Ralph S. Quatrano, PhD, dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Spencer T. Olin Professor, for the School of Engineering Graduate Recognition Ceremony at 1:30 p.m. May 17 in Edison Theatre.

Larry Shapiro, MD, executive vice chancellor for medical affairs and dean of the School of Medicine, will make opening remarks for the Program in Clinical Investigation and the Program in Population Health Sciences at 4 p.m. May 16 in the King Center in the Bernard Becker Medical Library. Faculty speakers Victoria J. Fraser, MD, the Adolphus Busch Professor and head of the Department of Medicine, and Graham Colditz, MD, DrPh, deputy director of the Institute for Public Health, the Niess-Gain Professor of Surgery and professor of medicine, will follow.

Jennifer R. Smith, PhD, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, for the College of Arts & Sciences Recognition Ceremony at 8:30 a.m. May 16 in Brookings Quadrangle. Student speaker is Andreas H. Mitchell, bachelor’s candidate in anthropology in Arts & Sciences.

Barbara S. Thomas, senior vice president and chief financial officer of HBO Sports, will speak at Olin Business School’s Graduate Diploma and Awards Ceremony at 3 p.m. May 17 in Athletic Complex Field House.

The Rev. Starsky D. Wilson, president and CEO of the Deaconess Foundation and pastor of Saint John’s United Church of Christ in St. Louis, for the Brown School at 3 p.m. May 17 in the E. Desmond Lee Concert Hall, 560 Music Center, 560 Trinity Ave. in University City.

Bernard “Bernie” Wolfe, adjunct instructor in University College in Arts & Sciences, for the University College Recognition Ceremony at 7:30 p.m. May 15 in Simon Hall Auditorium. Student speaker is Jessica Leigh Stanko, master’s candidate in international affairs in University College.

Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton, for the School of Engineering & Applied Science Undergraduate Recognition Ceremony at 2:30 p.m. May 16 in the Athletic Complex Field House. Student speaker is Trevor Hu, bachelor’s candidate in systems engineering and finance.
