A multi-sector panel will focus on U.S. immigration policies Tuesday, Nov. 8, at Washington University in St. Louis
U.S. Rep. Wm. Lacy Clay, D-Mo., will serve as keynote speaker for the forum, titled “A Nation of Immigrants: Reflecting on Challenges and Potential Solutions.”
To foster dialogue and cooperation, representatives of both political parties — as well as those who advocate for immigrants’ rights and those with experience in enforcement agencies — will participate. KMOX radio talk show host Charlie Brennan will moderate.
The event is set for 2 p.m. in Room 110, January Hall, on the university’s Danforth Campus.
Each of the panelists will introduce a different aspect of immigration, followed by a brief discussion and open dialogue among the audience and other speakers.
The panelists and areas of discussion are:
- “Legal Residency Documents & Notice to Appear Explained,” Charles Pratt, community relations coordinator, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Kansas City Field Office;
- “Foreign Investor Visas & Former INS Perspective,” Gene McNary, former commissioner, Immigration and Naturalization Service;
- “State vs. Federal: Struggle for Power & Legal Implications,” Ken Schmitt, attorney and chairman, American Immigration Lawyers Association, MO-Kansas Chapter;
- “Successful Assimilation: From Migration to Integration,” Anna Crosslin, CEO and president, International Institute of St. Louis;
- “Overcoming Minority Health Care Disparities,” Katherine Matthews, MD, director of clinical services, Casa de Salud; and
- “Community Cohesion,” Bob Fox, board chairman, Casa de Salud.
The forum is co-sponsored by the Association of Latin American Students, the Social Justice Center and Student Union at Washington University.
