Hugh Macdonald, the Avis H. Blewett Professor of Music in Arts & Sciences, received a gold medal from La Renaissance Française April 1 at the French Embassy in Washington, D.C. Macdonald was honored for his scholarship on 19th-century French composers Hector Berlioz, Jules Massenet, Edouard Lalo and Emmanuel Chabrier as well as his advocacy of classical French music as a teacher, lecturer, performer and libretto translator. Macdonald is one of the first six American recipients of La Renaissance Française’s medals for the promotion of French language or culture. …

Eugene M. Oltz, PhD, professor of pathology and immunology, has received a two-year, $304,000 subaward through Vanderbilt University from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for research titled “Control of Thymocyte Development and the Rag Expression by ZFP608.” This subaward is supported by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. …

Linda J. Sandell, PhD, the Mildred B. Simon Research Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, is this year’s recipient of the Women’s Leadership Award from the Osteoarthritis Research Society (ORS). The award is given annually to recognize a woman biologist, clinician or engineer who, throughout her professional lifetime, has made significant contributions to the understanding of the musculoskeletal system and musculoskeletal diseases and injuries. Sandell also is a former president of the ORS, serving a term from 1999-2000. …

Wei Zou, MD, PhD, research instructor in pathology and immunology, has received one of eight American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) John Haddad Young Investigator Awards.

Speaking of

Carter C. Revard, PhD, professor emeritus of English in Arts & Sciences, will present poetry readings and lectures at several European universities in May. He will speak at the University of Salzburg, Austria, May 3 and 4; at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, May 5; at the Modern Art Gallery in Oxford, England, May 14; at the University of Le Havre, France, May 18 and 19; and at the University of Montpellier, France, May 21 and 22.
