Have a lot of hair and would like a shorter look for summer? Want to make a difference in a child’s life at the same time?
The Locks of Love hair donation and haircut event will be held from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday, April 12, in the Fun Room of the Danforth University Center.
Locks of Love is a national nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children who suffer from longterm medical hair loss from any diagnosis. More than 2,000 children have been helped since the organizations inception in 1997.
Members of the WUSTL community who attend can donate 10 inches of hair to receive a free professional haircut or get a professional cut for a $20 donation.
All hair and money collected will be sent to the national Locks of Love organization.
“Locks of Love is a great way to donate something meaningful to a child suffering from long-term disease-related hair loss,” says junior Kimberly Hartstein, president of the WUSTL Locks of Love student group. “Oftentimes, a child’s hair is integral to his or her identity and self-image. Donating to Locks of Love allows you to literally give a piece of yourself to another human being in a very personal and practical way.”
Hartstein says that this year, Locks of Love is emphasizing the requirements to be a good hair donor. “Most importantly, hair must be sent dry and bundled into neat ponytails,” she says. “Colored and permed hair is acceptable, but bleached hair is not.”

Haircuts will be given by D-Zine Hair & Art Studio and Gladden Hair Design. Laughing Penguins Photobooth Studio will be taking complementary “before and after” photographs.
