Maia F. “Dolly” Schultz, longtime university accountant, died Dec. 30, 2009. She was 78.
Schultz worked in accounting at Washington University for more than 30 years, beginning as a manager of funds accounting, in which she was responsible for overseeing university grant expenditures. In 1986, as director of university funds and disbursement accounting, she became responsible for all payments to university creditors. She retired in 1993.

In addition to her full-time position at the university, Schultz lived in the Chancellor’s residence at University House — now Harbison House — ensuring it was well maintained and presentable for visitors.
“Dolly Schultz was a wonderful person, warm, very friendly, responsible and gentle,” said Chancellor Emeritus William H. Danforth. “She was an important part of the extended family of Washington University. Her many friends will miss someone we all respected and admired.”
While working full-time at Washington University, Schultz took evening classes and earned a bachelor of science degree in accounting.
Schultz was born in Virginia in May 1931 and moved with her mother to St. Louis after graduating from high school. Schultz held a number of different jobs — most often in accounting — before joining WUSTL, including a position on the famous sightseeing riverboat, The Admiral.
After retiring in 1993, Schultz moved to the Chesterfield neighborhood of “The Mansions of Spyglass Summit” and served as a trustee for the Spyglass Association.
Schultz is survived by her sister, Asterie Schultz Baker; nieces and nephews Asterie Baker Provenzo, David Baker, Pamela Bowker Opperman, Gary Bowker, Todd Bowker, Melissa Schultz Biggs, Grace Schultz, Hugh Schultz; and their families.
