Baseball sweeps Elmhurst, improves to 17-4

Washington University’s baseball team extended its winning streak to five games with a 4-1, 7-6 sweep against Elmhurst College on Saturday at Kelly Field. With the wins, the Red and Green improved to 17-4 overall.

Senior Andy Shields gave the Bears a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third in game one, smacking a double down the right field line to score classmates Arden Farhi and David Kramer. Sophomore Andy Webb posted an RBI single to center field in the fifth inning, and the Bears added another run in the sixth for the final 4-1 margin. Farhi finished 3-for-3 with two runs.

Junior Anthony Contaldo notched the Bluejays’ only RBI of the opening game with a base hit in the second frame. WU sophomore righthander Brian Williams pitched a complete game for the win, allowing just seven hits as he improved to 5-1.

In game two, Elmhurst (2-6) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. Senior Travis Cox notched an RBI single to left field and junior Scott Perkinson added a sacrifice fly for the Bluejays’ two runs in the second. With two outs in the top of the first, Contaldo connected on a solo home run to right field.

Freshman Nick Vom Brack helped lead the Bears back in the bottom of the second with a leadoff double to right center field. Webb followed with a single to right field, and junior Dave Working ripped a double to left field to score Vom Brack and Webb. Sophomore Zander Lehmann added an RBI double of his own, and Kramer put down a perfect bunt two batters later to squeeze Lehmann home for a 4-3 WU edge.

The Bluejays knotted the score at 5-5 in the fourth inning before Kramer delivered with a double in the bottom of the sixth that put WU up for good. Webb finished 2-for-3 with two runs and freshman Remy Midkiff added a pair of hits. Sophomore Jerry Price pitched the final three innings in relief of freshman starter Zach Richter; Price picked up his second win of the season.

Washington U. returns to action at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, against Maryville University.
