The Tango Group at Washington University will begin its fall season of dances and workshops Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17, 18 and 19.
On Friday, the group will present a free tango/swing/salsa dance hosted by Tom Stermitz, organizer of Denver’s annual Memorial Day and Labor Day tango festivals. The dance, which will last from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m., will take place in Karl Umrath Lounge, located in Umrath Hall, immediately north of the Mallinckrodt Student Center, 6445 Forsyth Blvd. It will begin with a half-hour introduction to swing dancing and also include, at 9:15 p.m., an introduction to close-embrace style tango.
On Saturday and Sunday, Stermitz will lead workshops on close-embrace tango at noon, 2 and 3:30 p.m. in the Mudd House Multipurpose Room, located in the university’s South 40, on Shepley Drive just east of Big Bend Boulevard. Cost for each class is $20 per person. Beginners are welcome and discounts are available for multiple classes. No partner is needed.
Subsequent fall events will include a dance and workshops hosted Nov. 19-26 by renowned Argentine dancer Pablo Alonso, a member of the teaching staff at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. The season concludes Dec. 11 and 12 with a dance and workshop hosted by dancer Brigitta Winkler of Berlin.
