The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University in St. Louis will present “Kahlil Robert Irving: Archaeology of the Present” Feb. 23 through July 29. An internationally acclaimed artist raised and based in St. Louis, Irving frequently examines issues and topics ranging from memory, race and digital media to Black life and the politics of industrial manufacturing.

“Things are always happening at once,” Adam Pendleton said. “I want the paintings to be like that.” In this video, Pendleton, one of the most celebrated visual artists of his generation, talks about his artistic process and how painting echoes the movement of the body.

The College Writing Program in Arts & Sciences celebrated the winners of this year’s Dean James E. McLeod First-Year Writing Prize this fall and marked the prize’s 10th anniversary.

Mary Ruppert-Stroescu, an associate professor and coordinator of the Sam Fox School’s Fashion Design program, will discuss the current state of sustainable fashion Oct. 27 as part of TEDx St. Louis Women: Two Steps Forward.

Artist William Villalongo and data scientist Shraddha Ramani will discuss their ongoing collaboration “Printing Black America: W.E.B. Du Bois’s Data Portraits in the 21st Century” Oct. 24. As the Sam Fox School’s 2023-24 Arthur and Sheila Prensky Island Press Visiting Artists, the pair will create new works for the series based on St. Louis.

Over the last two years, Carmon Colangelo, a celebrated printmaker and dean of WashU’s Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, has worked with the new 21c Museum Hotel St. Louis to create artworks for all 173 guest rooms.

A memorial for community activist Lovie M. Haynes, who died Sept. 9 at the age of 93, will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, in the Hamilton Village Garden in St. Louis’ West End neighborhood.

Multidisciplinary artist, experimental filmmaker and writer Crystal Z Campbell has been named the Henry L. and Natalie E. Freund Teaching Fellow at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts for the 2023-24 academic year.
