The Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis is pleased to announce that architects Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, co-founders of Grafton Architects in Dublin and winners of the 2020 Pritzker Prize, will serve as keynote speakers for the school’s spring Graduate Recognition Ceremony.

Each year since 1929, students at Washington University in St. Louis have organized a fully choreographed fashion design show. On May 9, the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts will present the 91st Annual Fashion Design Show on Youtube and Instagram TV.

The Pulitzer Arts Foundation and the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts have announced a new effort to support creative workers in the St. Louis area who are facing significant financial hardship caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 WashU/BJC Maker Task Force has emerged as a central hub for St. Louis-area makers to help people in health-care settings stay safe as they care for patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. The multidisciplinary group is working to develop everything from isolation gowns to ventilator replacement parts.

Portland, Ore.-based artist Lyndon Barrois Jr., and artist Wyndi DeSouza, who divides her time between St. Louis and Newark, N.J., have won the 2020 Stone & DeGuire Contemporary Art Awards.

Law and graphic design. Not necessarily two disciplines one thinks of as being related. But a new class at Washington University in St. Louis is using concepts from each to help students wrestle with the challenges of race, place and inequality.

The built environment often shapes the spread of disease. Many early cases of COVID-19, the 2019 novel coronavirus, centered on a seafood market in Wuhan City, China. Airports, hospitals and other gathering points can easily become sites of virus transmission. But as the world grapples with the COVID-19 outbreak, Hongxi Yin, associate professor in advanced building systems and architectural design at Washington University in St. Louis, is exploring whether using portable furnaces to sterilize contaminated building exhaust might help to stem the contagion.

“Midnight Special,” a new exhibition by Heather Bennett, lecturer in art in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, will open March 13 at Monaco, the artists’ cooperative gallery.

Develop an open-source nuclear detection system. That was the charge from the U.S. Department of Defense to members of its new internship program, the X-Force Fellowship. Washington University in St. Louis sophomore Andrew Bass had been selected to serve in the pilot cohort and arrived at Cape Canaveral in Florida convinced he would fail. 

Senior Libby Evan and junior Jina Hyun are representing the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis in Varsity Art XXIV. The annual exhibition, which opens Feb. 28, is hosted by Art St. Louis and features work by undergraduate and graduate students from St. Louis college- and university-level art programs.
