Nebraska’s legislature, assisted by research and guidance from Washington University in St. Louis, on May 24 unanimously  approved a universal Child Development Account (CDA) policy that will cover every resident born in the state on or after Jan. 1, 2020. Margaret Clancy, policy director for the Center for Social Development at the Brown School, advised lawmakers on the policy.

Once undocumented, Brown’s Robert Sagastume is advocating for policies and laws that will help immigrants access higher education. Expanded access is a win-win for us all, Sagastume says. “Latinx people are very community oriented and often pursue careers in nursing and teaching — positions that are going unfilled in our state. Why wouldn’t you want to leverage all of that potential to benefit our state?”

Five PhD candidates at Washington University in St. Louis were inducted into the Edward A. Bouchet Graduate Honor Society at the annual Bouchet Conference on Diversity and Graduate Education April 5-6 at Yale University.

A new analysis by the Social Policy Institute at Washington University in St. Louis examines enrollment and participation trends in a newly implemented national Israeli child development account policy, finding that 65 percent of households actively enrolled in the program during the first six months.

The 29th annual Pow Wow, a celebration of American Indian cultures, will be held Saturday, April 20, in the Washington University Field House. This year’s theme is “Keep Them Sacred: Honoring Generations of Indigenous Women.” Hosted by the Brown School’s Kathryn M. Buder Center for American Indian Studies, the event is free and open to the public.

Four Brown School graduates were honored as Distinguished Alumni during a recognition ceremony April 3 for their outstanding contributions to the fields of social work or public health.

From the beginning of his tenure, Mark Wrighton set out to put Washington University and its students and faculty on the map.

Michael Sherraden, the George Warren Brown Distinguished University Professor; Margaret Sherraden, research professor; and Jin Huang, research associate professor, all at the Brown School, will headline the conference “Innovation and Evaluation for Anti-Poverty Initiatives” April 11 and 12 at National Taiwan University.

Members of the Brown School community, including Dean Mary McKay, were honored with awards from the Congressional Research Institute for Social Work and Policy at the 5th Annual Social Work Day on the Hill in March.
