More than a dozen distinguished individuals will speak at Commencement-related events this week for Washington University in St. Louis graduates and their friends and families. The university’s 154th Commencement ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m. Friday, May 15, in Brookings Quadrangle.

Three doctoral candidates at Washington University in St. Louis were inducted into the Edward A. Bouchet Graduate Honor Society at the annual Bouchet Conference on Diversity in Graduate Education April 10-11 at Yale University.

Shelly Sakiyama-Elbert, PhD, of the School of Engineering & Applied Science at Washington University in St. Louis, recently graduated from Executive Leadership in Academic Technology and Engineering (ELATE) at Drexel University, a professional development program for women in academic STEM fields.

William F. Tate, PhD, dean of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, recognized outstanding performance by graduate teaching assistants during the annual Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence ceremony, held April 23 in the Women’s Building Formal Lounge.

Linda J. Sandell, PhD, the Mildred B. Simon Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, received the Alfred R. Shands Jr., MD, Award at the Orthopaedic Research Society’s recent annual meeting in Las Vegas.

Tiffany Osborn, MD, associate professor of surgery and of emergency medicine, and her colleagues published a paper April 2 in The New England Journal of Medicine about septic shock. The paper was chosen for the NEJM’s online forum and drew more than 23,000 views and several thousand podcast listeners.

The fifth annual Lavender Recognition Ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, in College Hall on the South 40. Co-hosted by LGBT Student Involvement and Leadership and the Social Justice Center, the ceremony honors the achievements and contributions of graduating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer students and their allies.

From May 4-15, contractors will clean, mill and repave Duncan Avenue between Boyle and Newstead avenues. During this time, Duncan will be closed in two phases.

G. Alexander Patterson, MD, the Joseph C. Bancroft Professor of Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been named editor of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, a peer-reviewed journal in cardiothoracic surgery.

Seven alumni of the School of Law at Washington University in St. Louis received 2015 Distinguished Alumni Awards on April 23.
