Cara Cipriano, MD, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and Kate Gerull, a medical student at the school, received a grant from the American Medical Association (AMA) Women Physicians Section and the AMA Foundation to conduct a multicenter study of gender factors that may influence students’ decisions to pursue careers in orthopedic surgery.

Kevin Moeller, professor of chemistry in Arts & Sciences, will receive a 2020 Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award for excellence in organic chemistry. The Cope Scholar Award is a national award sponsored by the Arthur C. Cope Fund and administered by the American Chemical Society. Only 10 recipients each year receive the award.

Associate professor Derek Hoeferlin has been named chair of the landscape architecture and urban design programs in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis.

Clara McLeod, earth and planetary sciences librarian for University Libraries, received the 2019 Mary B. Ansari Distinguished Service Award of the Geoscience Information Society at the society’s annual meeting last month in Phoenix. The honor recognizes significant contributions to the field of geoscience information.

Regis J. O’Keefe, MD, PhD, the Fred C. Reynolds Professor and head of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, recently selected Charles Goldfarb, MD, as executive vice chair. Six other faculty members also were appointed to serve as vice chairs.

Damena Agonafer, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and materials science, received the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Electronics and Photonics Packaging Division 2019 Early Career Award.

Patricia Weisensee, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and materials science at the McKelvey School of Engineering, plans to develop a liquid-metal-based heat switch for use in space with a three-year, $600,000 early-career award from NASA.

Arpita Bose, assistant professor of biology in Arts & Sciences, was awarded a second “Changing the Face of STEM” mentoring grant from L’Oreal USA to continue a summer laboratory research program for low-income high school students in St. Louis.

A new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine contains overarching goals and associated recommendations that health-care systems, government agencies and others should implement to better integrate patients’ social needs into health-care delivery. The Brown School’s Sean Joe was on the committee that developed the report.

David H. Gutmann, MD, PhD, the Donald O. Schnuck Family Professor and vice chair for research affairs in the Department of Neurology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has received the Abhijit Guha Award from the Society for Neuro-Oncology and the Section on Tumors of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
